Reports on Past and Upcoming Events/Classes/Workshops:

·         Weaving Van Gogh’s Palette

The show will take place at the Lux Center for the Arts (Lux Center) 2601 N. 48th St. throughout the month September 2019.  The theme is: Weaving the Palette of Van Gogh.

Guild members met earlier today to begin planning the details of the show.  Cheryl reported on the meeting and the following items were discussed:

Ø  There will be a First Friday event on Sept 6th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  All members, whether or not they have items in the show, are encouraged to attend the First Friday event.
Ø  Volunteers will be needed to help hang the items at the Lux Center.  Hanging the items will take place on September 3, 4, or 5 during the day.  The exact date and time will be determined once we know who is available and how many items will need to be hung. All items for the show should be delivered to the guild by August 29th.  Guild members will then take the items to the Lux Center.  All pieces must be ready for hanging – each piece must have something on it by which the piece can be hung.  We are looking at different ways to hang scarves.
Ø  Volunteers will be needed to take the show down, which will likely occur on Sept. 26, 27, or 28.
Ø  A volunteer is needed to coordinate food for the First Friday event.  Food should be “fiber-friendly” e.g. not sticky.
Ø  Maryjane volunteered to look into printing photos of the Van Gogh paintings that inspired each woven piece.
Ø  Maryjane also volunteered to be in charge of printing the artist cards that will hang by the woven pieces.
Ø  We will print postcards and a few flyers with information about the show.  Postcards should be done soon so that guild members can send them out to friends and family.
Ø  Rachel volunteered to design a poster with information about the guild that can be displayed at the Van Gogh show as well as at other guild events.
Ø  If anyone has connections to the newspaper or suggestions for publicity, please contact Cheryl.
Ø  Currently, 10 people have stated their intentions to participate in the show.  However, everyone is welcome to participate and we don’t need to know who will have something in the show until August.
Ø  The next meeting to discuss the show will be June 8, 2019 at noon.  All are welcome to attend the meeting even if not showing a piece.

Please let Cheryl know if you’re interested in volunteering.

Old Business

·         New group project ideas – the guild has opted to build on tied weave structures from the Robin Spady Workshop.  Catherine provided an overview of tied weave structures:  Generally, tied weaves are loom controlled pattern weaves that have short floats.  Tie-down means that the pattern weft is secured or “tied down” by specific warp ends.  The result is blocks that create the patterns.  Blocks can vary in size and there are many possible patterns.  The blocks that can be created are tied to the number of harnesses.   On a 4-harness loom, two different blocks can be created.   As harnesses increase, more blocks can be achieved.  Summer and Winter is a “single two-tie” structure and results in one side being light and the other dark.  The guild has a copy of the material from the workshop.  The information is well presented and the patterns provided are easy to follow.  The workshop material includes patterns that use 2-tie threading and some that use 3-tie threading.

·         Guild logo apparel (Jan T.) – The order has been fulfilled and all members have picked up their items.  We might place another order in about August.

·         Stitch video (Jan T.) – The person who wanted to make the video has not followed up with Jan and until he does so, this item will be removed from the Agenda

·         Storage Room (Cheryl R., Jan T., John G.) – Shelving estimates have been obtained. The cost for wood shelves that are about 2 feet deep is $454.25 plus shipping.  The depth of the shelves should

accommodate our large rubber tubs end-wise.  There will be about 4 shelves floor to ceiling.  The shelves are white, which will keep the room bright.  Wire shelving would cost about $770 without shipping.  The wire shelves were 20” deep.

Motion:            Jan moved to buy and install pre-finished adjustable shelving on the east wall and                          part of the south wall of the new store room, at an estimated cost of not more than                                    $500 from Mendards.  Cheryl seconded.

                                    Motion carried

Motion:            Jan moved to have permission to spend a maximum of $200 for organizational                                           and storage supplies, including but not limited to, pegboard, racks for reeds,                                              spacer stick storage, and tray table storage. Victoria seconded.

                                    Motion carried

·         YouTube video (John G. and Rachel W.) – The beginning class is being revamped so taping and making videos is on hold.

·         Weaving for the Guild Sale and Open House – We will compile a list of the looms are threaded and the weaving structure on them.  Members are welcome to weave on these looms to generate items for the guild sale.

Victoria and Jerry have constructed and donated spindles to be offered for sale.

·         Plaque – Cheryl will have Russell Brauer’s name added to the Honor Plaque

·         Monastery (Cheryl) – Cheryl had ordered 5/2 white perle cotton for the nuns to use for towels.  The yarn had to be back ordered and Cheryl has since been informed by Yarn Barn that the dye company that was the source of the yarn, has closed.  Yarn Barn is ordering from another vendor, which will hopefully provide enough yarn so that the nuns can finish the towels they have been working on.

Also, this morning Cheryl answered a phone call from a woman asking if Cheryl knew where to get             5/2 perle cotton because the caller wanted to donate the yarn to the Carmelite nuns.  After some          discussion, Cheryl learned that this was the woman who donated the loom to the nuns.  The woman is going to buy the yarn Cheryl has ordered to give to the nuns.  The caller also asked if the   nuns needed another loom.  The woman wants to provide the nuns with whatever they need or             help them find resources.  Cheryl will get back to the woman and tell her that the nuns probably          could use another loom.  After they finish the towels, the nuns want to weave fabric for their habits.

·         Roster/Address Book – The guild’s Address Book is being updated.  Members are asked to make sure that contact information for current and former guild members is correct.

New Business

·         Outside Sign – The guild sign above the door into the studio is wood.  We may want to consider having a plexiglass sign made for this spot.  Also, the plexiglass on the sign on the building at 48th & Cooper St. is cracking and will need to be replaced at some point.  It was suggested that we consider replacing both signs in 2020.

·         Equipment Rental Proposal (Cheryl, John) – It has been challenging for the guild to keep track of equipment and supplies.  The bigger items, such as looms, have inventory numbers and the guild has a policy for loom rental.  However, other guild supplies are more difficult to track.

Ideas:  Ensure all items are marked with Guild ID
Have members put checkout cards in a separate index card box
Have time limits for checking out and rechecking out items
Have members sign out supplies with another guild member present

A task force was formed to develop a proposal for inventorying and tracking guild equipment and    supplies.

Task group:  Cheryl R., John G., Diane B.

·         Give to Lincoln Day (Mandy)

The guild has received approval to participate in the event.  Give to Lincoln Day is a fundraising event coordinated by the Lincoln Community Foundation.  The Lincoln Community Foundation gives a proportional share of funds to the participating charities.  For example, if the guild gets 5% of total donations, the Lincoln Community Foundation will give us 5% of the funds they have allotted for Give to Lincoln Day.  Donations may be made online from May 1st to May 30th.  On May 30th only, donations may also be made in person at specified locations.  On May 30th charities may set up booths and solicit donations at Tower Square.  We could have people spinning or weaving at the Tower Square event.  A marketing class for participants to learn how to maintain donor lists is being offered on April 26th at 8:30 a.m. and noon.

Mandy has begun setting up the guild’s homepage for this event.  She is using the summary about the guild that is on our blog and has also linked the homepage to the blog.  She will also add a short history of the guild and some pictures.
